West 88th Street Storm Drain

There is a storm drain at the bottom of the valley on West Drive near West 88th Street, as shown in the middle of this picture. Why is this commonplace object accorded the status of a landmark? Because it is exactly one mile from the Daniel Webster Statue (at West 72nd Street) to here, and this is how you can get a timed mile run during a workout.
