GREENWICH CUP TRIATHLON, Greenwich,
CT (July 29, 2001)
- Shelley Farmer, 1:16:30, 3rd place overall
female
- Laura Miller, 1:28:15, 8th F40-49
- Jonathan Allen, 1:32:20
- Sandra Scibelli, 1:38:22, 69th overall,
24th age group
The most significant happening was that this was
Sandra Scibelli's debut triathlon! Ditto for Jonathan
Allen (who's that? we'll leave you to figure who this
VIP is ...). Shelley Farmer was 3rd female overall
and 13th overall (including the men!). Among the eyewitnesses
were Jerome O'Shaughnessy (about to be bitten by the triathlon
bug?) and Josh Friedman (already hopelessly infected
with the triathlon bug).

Live report from your team triathlon rep Ramon
Bermo:
- Let's start by saying "GREAT RACE by Olivier!!"
Our French triathlete put together what we must call The Perfect
Race --- very good splits, looked great at all times, and looked
even better after he finished and confirmed what he already knew
--- that he has earned a qualifying slot for the Ironman World
Championships in Hawaii. For those in the triathlon
world, you know what a 9:51 means, and especially on this very
tough course. For the less fortunate who are mere runners,
you can compare this to a sub 2:30 marathon (minimally).
More amazing if you take in consideration that this was his Ironman
debut. Good luck on October 6 in Hawaii.
- Another person who will be taking a Hawaiian
vacation is the "Papa" of triathlon. Most of you
know Mr. Papa as Mr. Galitsky, others as Ross. He put together
a very steady, very Ross-like performance, and his time of 10:40
is a 35 minute PR from his 1999 race. If you ask him, he'll
tell you that he would rather do a double or triple Iroman.
If you ask everybody else, they tell you that he looked very good
at all times, and made it look too easy.
- Guillermo Rojas, another amazing performance
!! This is his Ironman debut, and also his second triathlon of
the season. Our NYRRC employee did what he come to do, which
is as he puts it, to 'finish without killing myself'. If
there were an award for best performance with the least amount
of training, G'mo would have killed the competition !! He was
very steady very within himself the whole race, I know !! I have
the pleasure of running 21 miles with him, and I tell you, This
guy can talk !!!
- I know that Jay Borok was not too happy
with his performance, but how many of us would have even started
the race, just weeks after hurting our back in a accident?
I think he put a very good performance considering the circumstances.
We all know that he could have done much better, and we'll know
he'll do just that in 2002.
- David D'Adamo is another Ironman rookie.
I still have to figure out how a doctor can find time to train
for an Ironman competition. So if you runners think you
have it rough, you may want to talk to David. I did see
David during the running portion and he was all business. He did
what he came to do, and the question is "Will he come back
?"
- As for yours truly, two words, "Tough Day!"
I would have drop out, but I promised a mother-to-be, a first-time
parent and my new best friend Wells, that I'd cross the
finish line, and that I did !! At least I can say that I had the
pleasure of enjoying the company of my good friend G'mo for 21
miles, and I know that I was in the advance poster of the 2001
Lake Placid Ironman. Many thanks to Shula Sarner
and Isaya Okwiya for the cheering. I will report
that these two are closer and closer to crossing the red line
to go over to the dark side of triathlon. Before the event
Shula was saying that she'll be doing a triathlon in a couple
of years, while Isaya was giving himself 4 years. After
the race, Shula can't wait to do her first, and Isaya moved up
his triathlon debut to 2002. Yes, people, triathlon is addictive
!!!!
Addendum from Ross Galitsky:
- J.P. Cheuvront's hip flexor (pre-existing
injury --- doubt from running!) flared up right on the swim, and
it's a blessing that he was able to finish even the bike segment.
What is a bigger blessing is that J.P. had enough good sense and
maturity not to be swept away in the Ironman culture's "finish
at any cost" mentality. He had crossed "that finish
line" before in many Ironman distance races, and the ability
to be active soon again was more important than just another finish.
Post-report report from your team NYRRC representative
Guillermo Rojas:
- I'm not sure if you know this but Ramon Bermo
had a hard crash on the bike during the Ironman. Some other
triathlete was having bike problem and collided accidentally with
Ramon and forced him off the road. Ramon flipped over his
handlebar and landed on his side and hurting his knee. This
all happened around mile 60, so he rode another 62 miles and ran
a full marathon on a hurt knee. I ran next to him for 21
miles, and I knew that he was in a lot of pain. I know many
elite/pro athletes and I don't think any of them would have continued.
Ramon is one of the toughest people I know. While his time
was not what he wanted, but he finished on one leg ahead of 90%
of the participants.

VAIL HALF MARATHON, Vail, Colorado (July
22, 2001)
From Larry King:
I spent six days in Colorado vacationing, taking
a week off from running. On my last day there I ran the
Vail Half Marathon. The course started at the bottom of
a ski lift (7,000 ft) with the race gaining 3,000 feet during
the run. The race temperature ranged from 80 to 55 because of
the elevation gain. The first 4 miles was a steady incline, similar
to running up Cat Hill for four miles. Then the course got worse.
The next four miles was basically a hill climb. The elevation
made people dizzy and drained. All in all, a tough run.
My time was 2:24:25. I placed about 113th out of 237 runners.
I'm very glad to be back running in the relatively flat roads
of Central Park.

TAVERN ON THE GREEN BREAKFAST RUN, Central
Park, NY (July 18, 2001)
Blair Boyer's annual report:
After running the speed workout last night, I
didn't exactly expect to have fresh legs for today's run but who
can turn down the once a year opportunity of walking into Tavern
On The Green in running gear dripping of sweat and whatever else
and asking which way to the bathroom and hearing "Right this
way Sir"? As for the race, I was able to see Toby
Tanser for about 15 blocks until he got into the "elite"
lane.
I did see someone challenge Toby in the first
200 meters but in the next glance Toby had about 30 yards on the
guy. I did hear Stacy Creamer cheering on her bike
going down Harlem Hill as I was going up. Audrey Kingsley
was on the course cheering and at the finish line. Audrey
is saving herself for this Saturday's Run to Home Plate 5K.
She asked if I knew of any fast women that will be running I said
I heard a rumor that Dr. Kim, Gordon, Zofia & Alexa were sharing
a ride together. After the race, I spoke with Gary Murcke,
the owner of the Super Runner's shop, who said he was just coming
back after taking 5 years off from being thrown from a horse.
As for the rest of the report, I will submit the
below e-mail I received this morning from a world famous book
editor. "I understand from the workout report that
you plan to file the report on the Breakfast Run. In case
you weren't in a position to see, the other CPTCers I saw were:
Toby Tanser (obviously), Vincent Trinquesse, Patrick
Cowden, Mary Rosado, Jesse Lansner and NYRRC
Board of Directors candidate Alan Kipust (who ran the 3.4M).
Not sure which race Patrick and Mary were in, but they were running
together -"
Technical note: With this victory, Toby
Tanser moves ahead of the rest of the team by a score of 15
to 14.
