SERPENTINE RUNNING CLUB LAST FRIDAY OF THE MONTH 5K, London, UK (August 31, 2001)

Paul Stuart-Smith, 16:47, 7th overall

ABERCOMBIE & FITCH 5K, New Albany, OH (August 30, 2001)

Sylvie Kimché, 20:54 (6:44 min/mile), 5th overall female

Sylvie's comments:

1)  Based on my results, I'm pretty sure the course was short but I'm not sure by how much: anything between 30 seconds & 1 minute. I'll try to check the course on my bike upon my return to Columbus.  In any case, even if the course was 1 minute short, it was my best race in 3 1/2 years! (I'll have a better idea on Sunday after the Broadway on Broadway 5k as to what shape I'm really in).

2)  I was really 5th Woman (the person listed as #2 woman is really a man), the only woman from A & F to be in the top 10 (not that it is of any importance to my CPTC teammates, but it makes me feel good to be ahead of all the young Abercrombie & Fitch associates.  Even better: I was about one minute ahead of A & F health club manager!).  So I  guess all my golf training is paying off! Just kidding...... It's probably more the cross-training & the weights!

HALF-WIT HALF MARATHON, Mount Penn, Reading, PA (August 19, 2001)

Jonathan Federman 2:37:45 (5 minute PR)

This is not your standard half-marathon, for the race description reads:

Gonna spend another summer analyzing such complex issues as whether June Cleaver really liked to do housework in high heels or was just catering to a fetish that Ward skillfully kept hidden from Wally & the Beav?  Band together with other deep thinkers to come up with a word or phrase to identify that clear liquid that comes out before the ketchup, without using the word “preseminal”?  Find the elusive answer to why a well paid, once-employed person thought it prudent to spend money turning “Josie & the Pussycats” into a full length, live action film?   Or will you, instead, throw all high brow educational pursuits aside, realize that “being intellectual” only ever got you beat up after school and do something totally foolish and without societal merit; the “Half Wit Half”.   Yes, a 13.1 mile rustic trail run that, in the smorgasbord of athletic endeavors, is “fried pork rind”;  bad as hell for you but tasty while you’re doing it.  Includes the 3 toughest miles of the Mt Penn Mudfest plus 9 miles of ugly trail overlooking the factory outlet, pretzel & fat thigh capital of the world; Reading, PA!   Come enjoy our beautiful wooded trails before they’re included in George Bush’s Energy Exploration program.  Streak across downed logs, rocks galore, some occasional mud (no water crossings), the infamous “128 Steps from Hell”, more “ups and downs” than a Viagara research study, the best volunteers that free beer can buy and other plusses that make this one of the East’s most unique trail races..  A top notch race for the “Type A’s” but easy enough for those that, when they hear the word “Godiva”, think  “chocolate!” rather than naked women on horseback.  Legal Notice w/more holes in it than “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero after he turned “snitch”: YOU DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK AND ARE SOLELY RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN WELFARE AT ALL TIMES.  We’ll  search for you or carry you out about the same time that Sally Struthers say: “No, on second thought, cancel the second cheeseburger; I’ll have a salad instead.”  No entries under 18; it would constitute child abuse.  Same “stay home” goes for those with “attitudes”, scowls, B.O., or really clean sneakers!

YOKOHAMA MONTHLY TIME TRIALS, Yokohama, Japan (August 19, 2001)

From Charles Allard Jr: "I have found a pretty good way to win a race. Choose a tiny local race like the Yokohama Monthly Time Trials (横浜月列マラソン)in the middle of the vacation season (like August 19th) when no more than 25 people are running, wear your CPTC vest to psyche people out and cruise along the gravel banks of riverbed for a short distance (5k) in about 18:20.  It worked for me!"

  • Three open women's teams (CPTC, WSX and WTC) were tied for fifth place at 150 points each, and CPTC was awarded because our fifth runner Shula Sarner was 44th, ahead of WSX's fifth runner Raquel Ybanez at 45th with the same time and WTC's fifth runner at 52nd.  Thanks to Audrey Kingsley too, for being ahead of WTC's fifth runner.

    5  Central Park TC                 7 28 31 40 44 = 150
    6  West Side Runners        15 24 30 36 45 = 150
    7  Westchester Puma TC     4   8 39 47 52 = 150

  • On this day, we were missing quite a few runners.  At a recount, it was said that the absentees were either Canadian or Texan.  Now it is easy to understand the Canadian part, since most of this team seemed to be from there, but Texan?  What Texan?  That would be Kim Mannen, whose 'lame' excuse is that she is currently on crutches due to torn plantar fasciitis at the USATF Eastern Regionals.  Get well soon, Kim.  We want to see you on Fifth Avenue.
  • The two most surprising performances come from the Senior Masters.  Alston Brown is probably the top 50+ runner in the New York City area, but we have had difficulty fielding a team of three this year.  On this day, we came in second place because Alston finished first as expected, and then we had two other finishers in the elder 62-year-old Sid Howard and the very young Mark Gombiner.
  • On the women's side, we have two first-place finishes before this race when we fielded three runners and we did not score a single point in the other races.  So the real problem is: How can we persuade Sylvie Kimché to run the scoring races for us instead of playing golf in Cleveland?
Sylvie answers: "Could you please let the CPTC web master know that I play golf in Columbus, OH, not in Cleveland?  And maybe the best way to persuade me to run the scoring races for CPTC would be to at least take one photo of me when I do show up & run my best race in more than 3years! :).  So, anyway, when is the next scoring race?"

Technical notes:

  • Stefani Jackenthal and Shelley Farmer were 1-2 overall females among the non-Pros.  More importantly, because we are a running club, they were 1-2 overall females in the 10K run.
  • But the most incredible performance of the day goes to Aubin Sullivan.  All of us who have seen her recently at the Thursday workouts must be shaking our heads ...
