ROCKLAND HALF MARATHON, Orangeburg, NY (September 26th, 1999)

Richie Borrero, 1:18:12 (5:59 min/mile), 12th overall, 2nd M25-29
John Gleason, 1:37:13 (7:26 min/mile), 125th overall

HAMMERFEST TRIATHLON, (0.5 mile swim, 15 mile bike, 4 mile run) Branford, CT (September 26th, 1999)

1st place overall, TEAM ROJAS (aka NYU Team A), 1:13:03
5th place overall, TEAM NYUBT (aka NYU Team B), 1:17:15

The relay race of the day was that between NYU Team A (comprising of the three coaches --- swim coach Scott Willett, cycling coach Guillermo Rojas and running coach Ramon Bermo) versus NYU Team B (comprising of Julie Denney swimming, Ross Galitsky biking and J.P. Cheuvront running).  As you can imagine, this was pretty exciting as the coaches have their honor to defend against the pretenders.  The team results are not subject to dispute, but the individual competitions were heated, especially since individual splits are not available.  So, did J.P. Cheuvront really beat Ramon Bermo like he said?  How many seconds did Guillermo Rojas have on Ross Galitsky? We will have this and the next millennium to discuss this.

POLO RACE TO DELIVER (4 MILER), Central Park, NYC (September 26th, 1999)

This is a fun run.  The only reported times so far are Theo Spilka in 22:53 and Adam Bleifeld in 24:36 (=6:09 min/mile), a good time considering that he has a knee injury.  We may never find out the times for the other people unless they tell us.

We know that Frank Schneiger was there, because we saw him the day before running the Fifth Avenue Mile in a white singlet with the explanation, "I only have one singlet, which I am going to wear tomorrow."  But Frank, our web cameraperson was up in Van Cortlandt Park today!  What's the point?

  • For those who don't know, our first three runners in this race were three of our fastest runners in the early 1990's.  They are also great people.  It is good to see them back in the same race for a good cause.  It is also good to know that some of us get married, have kids and move to 'burbs eventually.  Yes, there is still hope for the rest of us ...
  • Ellen Wallop's result is particularly significant in light of the fact that she just underwent surgery for breast cancer in August.  Ellen has been an active member on the club for a long, long time and has devoted hundreds of hours working for the club (see Photo of her checking people in at the 1998 Awards Dinner).  On July 15th of this year (see archive), she came back for a road workout after a six year absence.  August came with the bad news.  So we are happy to see her rebound again.

CENTRAL PARK TRIATHLON, Central Park, NYC (August 22nd, 1999)

See Photo/Video Album

(report courtesy of Stuart Calderwood)

The course is: 1/4 mile in Lasker Pool, 12 miles on the bike (2 Central Park loops), and a 5-mile run (on the upper 5-mile Central Park loop).

  • 1st overall--Randy Ehrlich, 1:11:33

(Randy took the lead from Ross Galitsky in the first mile of the run and held off a late challenge to win by 18 seconds.)

  • 3rd overall--Peter Allen, 1:12:04

(Peter was closing fast on everyone and missed catching the second-place man by 11 seconds, despite his excellent 5-mile yesterday.)

  • 4th overall, 1st man 35-39--Ross Galitsky, 1:14:18

(Ross looked nonchalant throughout, WON the swim, kept the lead throughout the bike leg while making funny hand-gestures to the spectating crew of Scott Willett, Julie Denney, Carol Tyler, Lynn Blackstone, Stuart Calderwood, Ramon and Juana Bermo, Bola Awofeso...oh, yeah, and Aubin Sullivan.  Obviously owing in large part to his Ironman last weekend, Ross knew that his run wouldn't be up to his highest standard.)

  • 10th overall, 1st man 45-49--John Megaw, 1:19:23
  • 12th overall (men and women), 2nd woman overall--Stacy Creamer, 1:20:45

(Stacy took advantage of her recent maniacal cross-training--about 1 1/2 mi./day in the pool--and was 4th out of the water, OVERALL, ahead of such notables as Randy Ehrlich and Peter Allen. In the women's race, she trailed only an ex-Soviet international track competitor (3K PR--9:36), and took second for the second straight year--each time a day after a 5M PR in the Club Team Championships. [Last year--31:19. This year, 30:37!] )

  • 25th overall (men and women), 3rd overall woman--Laura Miller, 1:24:19

(Laura had a big improvement over last year, and also capped the rather remarkably dominant CPTC team performance--2 of the top 3 men, 2 of the top 3 women.)

  • 51st overall, 1st M60-64-, Odin Townley, 1:29:21

Odin was one of three "doublers" [with Peter and Stacy], all of whom not only competed in two high-quality races in one weekend, but excelled at both. Odin was 10th in his age-division in the Club Championships, and then exhibited very impressive powers of recovery.

  • 15th overall, 4th M35-39, Kurtis Edwards, 1:22:07

Kurtis was the exception to the rule (namely, Peter, Stacy and Odin) because he made a conscious choice between the Saturday and Sunday races.  This race was his triathlon debut.  His running must have helped because he was zipping by people at the end.

Notes:

  • Those of you (like us) who have been following this event live on the Internet must have agonised with our friends.  For example, Ramon Bermo had marathon splits of 1:41:50 and 2:08:54 and John Taylor had splits of 2:07:13 and 3:50:20!  Ouch!
  • We note that Scott Willett planned not to run the marathon as he had missed a lot of training due to injury, Julie Denney had stomach problems during the second half of the run and was given medical advice not to continue, and Richard Kixmiller ran for about 10 miles before stopping.

TAVERN ON THE GREEN BREAKFAST RUN, Central Park, NYC (July 14th, 1999)

Reporter # 1: Blair Boyer

Last night, I caught up with the always training Audrey Kingsley doing a lower loop of the park. She said that she will most certainly be at the Breakfast Run on Wednesday. In true CPTC fashion, she will also be attending the Tuesday evening track workout. When asked if she would stick around for the actual post-race breakfast, Audrey replied "Of course, why do the race otherwise?"

Reporter # 2: Eve Kaplan

Audrey Kingsley was the second woman in the 6 mile race in a time of about 39 minutes.  The first place woman Laurie Corbin was interviewed by the news team, but Audrey received no recognition for her efforts, which makes me wonder "Why the hell run the race anyhow?!" Unless you're... Eve Kaplan ... who did a 4-mile warmup with her running partner before 6:00am, and then proceeded to run only the 1.7 mile race so she could get to the Tavern fast and have time to eat breakfast and read the free newspapers (which is why I run it). The breakfast that the Tavern provides, while lovely in its garrish setting, is not worth seriously racing for!

I made the mistake of getting dressed in the dark, and was wearing neon pink shorts and the orange CPTC singlet. This caused one 1.7 mile runner to yell "Hey, aren't you elite runners supposed to be doing the 6-mile run instead?" to which his friend replied "Hey, aren't you elite runners supposed to wear coordinated outfits?"

Last night after the track workout, Jarl Berntzen reported that he was planning to be there, but I didn't see him. Any other CPTC'ers there? I didn't see anyone, but, considering I was not awake (and am now (at 8:30am) resorting to toothpicks to keep my eyelids open) I might have missed them.  I am signing off to have my 4th cup of coffee. Too bad I switched to decaf about 3 months ago.

REPORTER # 3: Stuart Calderwood

Stacy and I made it to the Loop about a minute before the leader arrived at approximately the 1 1/2-mile mark.  Audrey was sharing 2nd among women, about fifty yards behind Laurie Corbin, a frequent local race winner.  We watched about 100 runners altogether, all in the six-mile, and saw no more CPTC competitors.  We did see Sarah Gross on her bicycle.

We ran across the park to the southern pumphouse and waited again; Audrey had dropped the woman who'd been with her, and was slightly farther behind Corbin --- but looked strong and was in a good mood; she clicked her watch just as she passed us, and I said "What's the split?"  She said "6:21 for that mile."  At the speed workout (a mere 10 hours earlier!), she had said that she was hoping to run 6:30's.   Since the mile she's just finished when we last saw her is half-uphill and half-flat, we can assume that she was having quite a good race.

Note: Laurie Corbin may have won the race, but Audrey Kingsley definitely got more lineage ...

  • Ramon Bermo said, "I finally got one right."   Amen.
  • You will note that Ramon Bermo was about 5 minutes behind Ross Galitsky at the start of the half marathon.  Ross said, "Somehow Ramon has convinced everyone that he is now a trigeek and therefore can't run fast anymore.  He made everyone relax on the run, and then WHOOM ... BOOMMMMM...<insert sound effects of Ramon breaking the sound barrier> and he was passing everyone like they were standing (I was definitely standing)."  But how about this sound clip instead?
  • As for Ross Galitsky, he has a built-in excuse because he has not been able to train due to an injury (note: the preceding statement contains a subtle nuance that is known only to his circle of friends).

In the triathlon team relay, the winning all-female team was Charlap/Featherman/Bonamego.

Monica wrote: "I participated in the team relay ... all female ... and we won!  It also was my best time in a 1/2 marathon in the past 2 years.  I'll make my way to a 1:30 ... slowly but surely."

  • What?  No CPTC woman in the race?  Not true, as eyewitness Bola Awofeso reported that Eve Kaplan ran the race without a number (note: ask her why yourself).   Her time of 1:35 was five minutes faster than her time last year.

Tyronne Culpepper's diary: "A lot of interesting things happened on our trip, so I thought I'd share them:

  • Arriving in Utica around 4:30 (the chip & number pickup was scheduled to close at approximately this time), we scrambled to get a cab there.  We quickly learned that these cabs weren't New York City ones (and there were probably only 2 in town).  Untidy would be an understatement.  So, we arrived at the Expo tent, hoping to find a sympathetic soul to save us from having to pick up our stuff before the race start (around 6am).  Who we found was a guy who must have had some military training as he refuted every effort we made to get our stuff.  Harry, being the more aggressive of us three, was determined not to walk away empty-handed.  His efforts were fueled by the sight of several people exiting the tent, after the "guard" said all the chips & numbers had been taken away. (Yeah, right:-)  With some quick thinking (I told Harry to use a believable story, like our train arrived late) & worked to perfection:-)
  • Harry asked one of the security guards to call him a cab & so he did, to his face!:-) At this moment, I thought to myself, we're definitely not in NYC anymore:-).   Well, we made it to the hotel in time to watch the USA women soccer team win the World Cup & relax.
  • Dinner was an event.  Victor & Harry took me to a place they went to last year, called Friendly's.  Amazingly enough, we survived.  Our waiter was so bad that several people walked out after waiting too long for any service. Harry & I refused to tip him. But the kind-hearted Victor gave him $2.
  • Race day arrived & we saw Lynn & Dave Blackstone, happy to see other Central Park runners. The course was tricky, w/ some long downhills & several well-placed uphills.  Of course I did the usual Tyronne start (TM), only to fade by the 1 mile mark as Victor, then Harry passed me, capitalizing on their prior knowledge of the course.  I figured since I had already blown my race, I might as well enjoy my 8.3 miles of torture.  It seemed as if the whole town was there cheering the runners on, and I joined in getting the crowds to yell louder.  Victor finished just off last year's time & Harry had a outstanding race (well over a minute PR) & I finished with a PR only because this was my first and probably only 15k ever:-)
  • Oh, a final post race note, Victor taught us proper post race etiquette:   Whoever ran the fastest race gets to shower first!!!!  I guess if I felt bad about my race, I could use one guy's words to his sons: " Hey, your dad beat a former Olympic Gold Medalist!!" (Frank Shorter)

Michele Tagliati wrote us: "To show you that I don't withhold information, I'll report a result that not even the Global Surveillance System (TM) could have found --- On July 4th, I placed 3rd overall (1st age group 30-39) in the Chebeague Island Road Race, a classic event held every Independence Day on that lovely Island in Maine. It is a 4.2 mile race on mixed terrain -- mostly paved with a short tract on a dirt road, a good dose of hills and many enthusiastic followers along the way. It was also a classic 'triple 80', with about 80 runners, a temperature of 80 degrees and 80% humidity ... If you're interested, my official time was 25'36" (6'06"/mile)."

Commentary: First, Tom Phillips won the CEO division of the Corporate Challenge # 2.  Next, Curtis Fletcher and Peter Gambaccini were racing each other in Greenwich, CT.  Then at the fireworks show in Waveny Park, New Canaan, CT, Graydon Pihlaja was spotted playing the trombone in a partiotic Fourth of July band, in the company of the lovely Patty and the sweet Emily.  Now with Fred Kolthay racing in Mahopac this weekend, is it ... like ... the '80s all over again?
