YEAR 2000 AWARDS

  1. MAC/USATF 2000 TRACK & FIELD AWARDS:   Central Park Track Club members continue to dominate the track scene.  Sid Howard and Mary Rosado have been selected as MAC's Masters Male and Female Track Athlete of the Year by MAC's Track & Field Awards Subcommittee.  So Mary finally receives the award after being the Susan Lucci of track & field.  Other CPTC members receiving achievement awards are: Sue Krogstad-Hill, Alston Brown and Skipper Clark.   The awards will be presented to the athletes at MAC Annual Banquet in the spring.

  2. MAC/USATF DISTANCE RUNNING AWARDS:  The following Central Park Track Club runners will receive Masters Distance Running achievement awards from MAC for 2000 --- Stuart Calderwood, Stacy Creamer and Alan Ruben.  The Master Athletes of the Year went to Jerry Macari (UATH) and Jean Chodnicki-Stemm (WS).

  3. MORE INDIVIDUAL HONORS AND AWARDS: Noah Perlis has won the USATF New Jersey Grand Prix Sprint Award for 2000 for Men 50-59 (points based on winning races of 400m or shorter distances in five Grand Prix meets).  In all humility, he explained, "It helped my point total in that some of the events were uncontested, although I think I would have won anyway based on lack of competition within NJ residents.  I have a good chance of winning for 2001 if they institute a Grand Prix award for Bergen County residents, or even Ft. Lee, but I doubt that will happen anytime this century."

Comment from Stacy Creamer: An astonishing large contingent of CPTCers showed up for the race.  Quite a feat, considering the weather, and that most of us had last seen our fellows on the dance floor about ten hours before.

  • His own prognosis: "I have been injured for the last 3 months, and I maintain my physical conditioning by biking.  I was entered into the Philadelphia Marathon, but I had to cancel.  But there is no way that I am going to cancel a trip to Hawaii.  So I have been training to walk.  I don't care if it takes me eight hours, I am going to complete this marathon."
  • His diagnosis:  "I didn't end up walking the whole race.  I was running until 30K, when my lack of long-distance running caught up.  This is a spectacular course.  I want to go back some day to run this race when I am physically fit."

  • Graeme Reid first wrote: "For some reason my time was not recorded on Sunday, although I clocked my finishing time at 36:11 (or was that 30:11?). As seems to be the constitutional right of everyone in the US - I demand a re-count - I obviously had a dimpled chip - or a re-run of the race. I'm sure I passed Toby on the finishing straight. My legal team are currently preparing my case for the Supreme Court.  I will be using your photographic evidence of the obvious pain I was going through to win the race!"

  • After a twenty-hour marathon recount, Graeme wrote: "The Supreme Court has announced their judgement and forced NYRRC to re-instate my time! The nation can rest easy - ALL runners now legally counted."

KNICKERBOCKER 60K, Central Park, NYC (November 25, 2000)

Guenter Erich, 6:16:08 (10:06 min/mile), 28th overall, 1st age group

Guenter Erich is of course a well-known name in ultra-distance races.  If you look at the history of the Metropolitan 50 Miler, you will find his name at #4 (5:59:12 at age 49 in 1982), #7 (6:19:25 at age 49 in 1983) and #9 (6:33:32 at age 46 in 1979) among Men 45-49.

TECHNICAL NOTE:  Our professional fact-checker pointed out that Guenter has two race times at age 49.  Is that possible?  Actually, we had pondered the situation before we published, and it is theoretically possible.  For example, if your birthday falls on November 5th, you can have two New York City Marathon times at the same age from the 2000 race (on November 5th) and the 2001 race (on November 4th).  In Guenter's case, we actually don't know if this was the case because the races took place before we were born (meaning our 'running life', of course).

FROM THE GUENTER ERICH FILES: "Yes, it was just as you said.  One race was in November '82 and the other was in March '83.  My birthday is in May."

MAGUIRE TURKEY TROT,  Philadelphia, PA (November 23, 2000)

Over a rocky, 5-mile dirt-trail course on a 25-degree Thanksgiving morning, Central Park's eminent VP Stacy Creamer met yet another challenge head-on.   Creamer, recently a bit too Tobylike in the frequency-of-racing department, had also been finishing Tanserishly: her overall placings over the last four weekends had been 2nd (Not Quite the NYCM), 1st (Central Park All-Comers'), 2nd (New York Masters' XC), and 5th (National Masters' XC).  This did not include her 3rd-place showing in the Yale Alumni Open fencing tournament, in which she matched foils and epees with her alma mater's current varsity team and other graduates. (Stacy is Class of '81.)  The tournament, in which Stacy fenced more than ten bouts, was held on the day before the National Cross Country Championships, and she felt some odd sore spots during her pre-race warmup in Holmdel.  Now, on Thanksgiving, less than a week later, she was admittedly frazzled--overraced and overfenced--and had at least two sore hamstrings.  But present at the Maguire Turkey Trot as a walking entrant was none other than her father, J. Shane Creamer--first in his division of the previous year's Philadelphia Bar Association 2-Mile.  Stacy could not be convinced to jog.

Two of the Maguire sisters, remembering Stacy's course-record-setting performance in the race's 1998 edition, took the pace out hard.  Stacy established contact before the mile, then took over the lead--only to be shadowed throughout the entire race by Tara Maguire, fresh off a recent 39-minute 10K and eager to reestablish clan supremacy.  Stacy, visibly altering her stride to protect her several aches and pains, clung to a ten-second lead for four miles, despite repeated gritty challenges from Maguire.  The Central Parker prevailed in a misleadingly slow time of 35:16--this is tough terrain--by a mere 13 seconds over the tenacious local standout.  As is their custom, the Maguire family invited a largish crowd of race finishers to a local coffee bar--an arena in which Stacy holds several age-group records.

On the Men's side, Stuart Calderwood won in 28:48, after escaping from a high school cross-country runner who took off fast and was still near him at 2 1/2 miles.  Stuart was still recovering from yet another Tuesday night speedwork with Alan Ruben and therefore didn't threaten his own course-record of 27:08 from 1998.

Historical Note:  Do you remember the famous 1998 Maguire Turkey Trot?  That race was memorable because Stuart Calderwood and Stacy Creamer finished first and second in the race --- yes, we're talking about first and second place overall.

TURKEY TROT (5 MILES), Prospect Park, Brooklyn (November 23, 2000)

It was 28 degrees, windy and crisp in Prospect Park. Toby Tanser won in 26:46. At 9:26am (26+ minutes after the start), our Global Surveillance System observed him scoffing at the top prize award of the pumpkin pie.  How about just bagels (and hot coffee!), guys?

Kevin Arlyck wrote: It's 3:00pm and there's nothing up yet on the website about the Turkey Trot in Prospect Park today! Are you asleep? Have you gone away somewhere for the holiday? I know that it was just a fun run, so no times were recorded and the NYRRC website is totally unhelpful, but I expected better of you!  Anyway, I counted three CPTCers, though there could have been more hidden underneath all the sweatshirts, scarves, and hats out there. The temperature was in the mid-20s, not including wind-chill.  Toby Tanser won, and was rewarded with a plaque and pumpkin pie. I was standing behind him at the start, and he appeared to be regretting his decision to run in his matching blue-and-yellow singlet and shorts. Rich Borrero spotted my club singlet, introduced himself at the starting line, and promptly sped off, probably finishing in the top-5.  He was kind enough to come back onto the course 100 meters and cheer others (including myself) to the finish.  I finished 8th, in 28:54, a PR.  With about a half-mile left someone shouted "Way to go, Central Park! Welcome to Brooklyn!"

Also present:  Noel Comess and Blair Boyer (Technical note: The photographic evidence was collected by Toby Tanser who dashed to pick up his camera and go to work immediately after the race, while bypassing the pumpkin cake)

Charles Allard Jr. wrote: "I am so embarrassed, so maybe you can put it in really really small print. The Watarase Yusuichi Marathon which translated means (roughly) the Wetland Crossing Water Park Marathon was run on November 12th.  Being Japan, they took some wetlands, drained them, and constructed an artificial lake for wind surfers and fishermen. They needed construction jobs apparently.  The top runner finished in 2:35, I in 3:08:13 (official time). 70th out of 2020 runners. I was really hurting at 34k. My official excuse is that I had ten minutes between parking the car, after a two hour car ride, and the start to pick up my number and line up. The highlight of the race was the Tomato Station at about 30k. Yes, you read that correctly, the Tomato Station. They handed out fresh tomatoes to eat. The skin was kinda tough to digest though. The course was OK, two laps over a combination of cement, asphalt, gravel and grass. Charles 'I am still in pain' Allard Jr"

Stacy's comments: "It was thoughtful of the NYRRC to deplete the field in the All-Comers 2.62-Miler for me by holding a marathon the same day.  You will find it useful to know that it is possible to hop on a cab and go from Central Park to the start of the New York City Marathon in under 45 minutes.  Indeed, if I had also ran the marathon, I would have been able to say, 'I was the first female to cross the finish line inside Central Park on November 5th, 2000 when the New York City Marathon was held.'"

XTERRA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP (1.5k swim, 30k bike, 11k run), Maui, Hawaii (October 22, 2000)

David Diviney, 3:27:42 (28:06 swim, 2:03:34 bike, 56:02 run), 102nd place overall

Note:  Please, this is not your regular triathlon!  This is your EXTREME triathlon!  The bike course is a 30-kilometer MTB special that traverses the slopes of the long dormant volcano, Haleakala, and features two 1000-foot climbs and a 1400-foot descent to the seaside.

From David Diviney himself:

Oh my God!

The whole XTERRA experience was amazing. The 1.5k swim was in Wailea Bay, basically calm water, but a frenzied mess getting to the first buoy.  No wetsuits, not ideal for the super skinny bad swimmer.  The mountain bike leg was rough. The ride was along the slopes of a 10,000' volcano, Mt Haleakala. We climbed more than 3000' over 30k.  The course was extra hot, dry and sun-exposed with all the descending over softball-sized, jagged lava rocks. As the 11k run started, the temperatures entered the mid to high 80s. We ran on the sand, through the woods, along a lava cliff and the sun-baked street. My legs were junk as I wobbled through the finish. A bunch of people were carried through the finish to the med tent.

I highly recommend it.

SODEGAURA SEASIDE ROAD RACE (15K), Sodegaura, Japan (October 22, 2000)

This race is advertised as a run along the sea shore, but actually run among chemical factories located near the sea (where they conveniently can dump their waste.)

Top time: 50:41
Top CPTC runner: Charles Allard Jr 61:26
Total runners: 702

Race notes: "As you get older and are unable to beat most competitors outright, you try to devise ever more ingenuous ways to claim records, i.e. longest run in mud, fastest down a hill on your bum, etc.  In this spirit, I decided to try to run two laps of the same 15k race and see if I could beat the slowest runner.  They didn't tell me that there was a 2hr time limit and the runners had all been assigned race numbers based on speed.  I was unable to beat the last man in, but I did get an ovation from the race volunteers."

  • Toby Tanser wins the PHS Health Plans Half-Marathon Grand Prix series.  Of the five races, Toby did not run the Queens Half Marathon.  So in order to beat out someone who had perfect age-group victories in all five races, he had to win the last two races outright to get extra points.  Thus, Toby gets cash (105 points at $1.50 per point for a total of $157.50 to cover the Starbucks coffee/bagel bills after Uncle Sam takes his cut) in addition to the commemorative patch.
