KAWASAKI HALF ROAD RACE, Kawasaki, Japan (March 12, 2000)

This note came from Charles Allard: "On 12 March I ran the Kawasaki Half Road Race (in Kawasaki, Japan) and came in 5th for my age group, and  6th overall in 1:20:57.  It was rainy, cold, windy, and ran entirely on this bizarre wet sand/mud mixture along the banks of a river.  I intended to go slow on this out-and-back course, but one guy drafted behind me the ENTIRE WAY OUT while we were (I was) running into the wind.  Of course he tried to pass me as soon as we turned around and all I had to do was pretend that Victor Osayi was right behind me and that put the afterburners in action and gave me a nice negative split by about 2.5 minutes.  The winner passed the line in about 1:15:00.  Oh yeah, I was wearing orange."

From Noah Perlis: "Last night a relay team from the Central Park Track Club smashed the existing world 10,000m time by having 10 men each run five 200m legs (50 laps total) in a blistering 24:41! (Yes, I have the blisters to prove it).  The team lapped all other teams at least once. We were the only team to have 10, so each other team had to run at least 400 or more per leg.  Each of us run every 10th lap.  It was the Thursday's series smallest turnout by far, but a lot of fun, including handicap races. The team consisted of Noah Perlis, Frank Handelman, Sid Howard, Rich Hamner, Craig Plummer, Dean Kerr, Alan Bautista, Jesus Montero, Phil Carpenter Lee, and Ray Prybylski."

In this race, you are running up a narrow stairwell and so position is everything.  Here is a film clip of the start of the race.  This is a big file (2.3 megabytes), so make sure that you have bandwidth and patience.  We have excised the soundtrack (in Spanish) to save time.  Once you download the file, you can look carefully --- you should have no problem finding the tall Stacy Creamer in the dark blue CPTC jog bra and Julie Denney in the bright orange jog bra.  The men are harder to discern, but you should be able to find Stuart Calderwood (tall in orange singlet), Ramon Bermo (wearing a white cap) and G'mo Rojas (tall in orange singlet, at the very end of the clip).  But where is our man Scott Willett?

KURT STEINER 50K, Central Park, NYC (February 19, 2000)

Dan Sack finished in 6th place in a time 3:57:55, approximately 30 minutes faster than last year's race.

Interesting side note: There was a disqualification of the second-place runner after he was observed transferring his bib number and essentially playing tag team with another runner hiding in the bushes wearing similar cloths.  Another error made by these "America's Dumbest Runners " (and noticed by race officials and other participants) was that they forgot to wear similar running shoes.

CLUB NIGHT GALA, New York Hilton, NY (February 12, 2000)

Central Park Track Club winners

  • Alan Ruben, best Male 40-44 (third year in a row)

  • Megumi Fukami, best Female Ultramarathoner

  • Open Men's Team, fourth place

  • Masters Men's Team, first place

  • Open Women's Team, third place

  • Masters Women's Team, third place

Other CPTC nominees: Alayne Adams, Stuart Calderwood, Sandra Olivio, Irene Jackson, Carol Tyler, Sid Howard, Guenter Erich

Other sightings:

  • Blair Boyer went up onstage to accept the Masters team awards, having been the third scorer in one race.  "I don't know what happened.  Maybe nobody else could get out of bed that morning."  Well, the fact is that Blair was a scorer, no matter what, and therefore deserves to share the honor.

  • Coach Tony Ruiz was extremely proud to leave with the Tiffany plate for our winning Master's team and was seen later dancing maniacally.

  • Sid Howard led approximately 200 people in the "Electric Slide"

  • Our food/party critic rated this Club Night a "B," over last year's "D" but behind the "A" of two years ago, when it was catered by Louis Lanza of Josie's fame (and Famous Saying #762).

Wish you were there ...

BOSTON UNIVERSITY ST. VALENTINE'S INVITATIONAL MEET, Boston University, Boston, MA (February 12, 2000)

John Scherrer, 9:11.56, 58th place

John Scherrer stunk --- he stunk bad

Boston, MA (special report exclusive to www.centralparktc.org ).  Removed from the familiar pastures of New York City's Armory, Scherrer was overmatched in Boston University's St. Valentine's Invitational.  Although he glided out to a 4:44 opening mile, the Central Park Track Club's mild-mannered hero could not muster a good finish.  Spectators believed that he gave up in the last 600 meters, landing in 58th place out of 63 finishers.

Reaction from the Central Park Track Club camp was mixed.  Roland Soong was baffled.  He asked, rhetorically, "What could possibly motivate someone to travel 9 hours for 9 minutes of running?" And he added, "It was just as well that he ran as the ubiquitous 'unattached' and not under our brand name."  Coach Tony Ruiz was more concerned with the actual results and stated frankly, "That was not a respectable performance."

Despite the obvious mediocrity of Scherrer's run, an anonymous CPTC runner commented, "Don't worry. The kid is training hard.  I think we'll see his 'A' game at Snowflake." Scherrer was unavailable for comment, but Stuart Calderwood and Craig Chilton will undoubtedly have plenty to say.

Sid Howard, 43:50 (7:04 min/mile), 66th overall, 1st M60-69

We note that Sid has calmed down quite a bit now compared to his younger days.  Back in 1995, this was his itinerary

  • On January 8th, he ran the 7.2 mile Princess-to-Princess Race in 45:47 for 1st master and 19th overall to win a dinner for two.

  • On January 14th, he fared even better when he won $250 for his Bermuda 10K performance of 38:08 for 1st master.

  • On January 15th, he "jogged" the Bermuda Half Marathon in 1:26:07, breaking his own age group record.

  • P.S.  Naturally, he was on the injury list for a few weeks afterwards, but that was also part of his standard itinerary.

John Scherrer wrote: "John Scherrer was 3rd in the 3000M (9:06.81). The meet started at 6pm and his race started at 11:45pm. If he had run much slower, he wouldn't have even finished until the next morning! What was even funnier was that there was a 4x400M relay after the 3000M, and there were these little kids competing who were ready to fall asleep.  The moral of the story is to avoid MAC meets at all costs.  Go to Thursday Night at the Races instead."

EYEWITNESS REPORT

"Kim Mannen ran what was believed to be her first 400m race in ... oh, like 35 years, and did she run! She not only ran her heart out, but she raced and raced smart.  Running on the outside, she was passed by Louise Clark-Feaster (A.U.R.A.) at about 150m.   Kim did not panic and stayed right behind her.  On the far turn with 100m to go, Kim made her move but stayed behind until she hit the last straightaway where Kim came up beside her and passed her with about 25m to go. Her time was 68 sec! Not bad for a redneck, huh?  So, why get lost in a sea of 350,000 people running the 'Muskrat 10K' or whatever when you can be running with Kim?"

Technical note on political correctness: If you were appalled at the use of the 'redneck' descriptor, please note that this (and only this) particular author is entitled to do so in this instance.  You see, writing about yourself in the third person is standard practice on this club ...

MILLENNIUM MIDNIGHT RUN, Central Park, New York City (January 1, 2000)

PHOTO ALBUM

Peter Gambaccini reported the following in Runner's World Daily: "Third prize of $500 was taken by Noel Comess, a baker, and Amanda Hesser, a 'New York Times food writer,' who came as a champagne bottle and a champagne glass."  While it is standard for money-winning runners on our club to give the coach a symbolic $1, it is not clear whether or not coaching is relevant here.  Here is the photo!

COMMENT ON THE USE OF APOSTROPHES --- If Amanda Hesser is a 'New York Times food writer', then Noel Comess deserves to be a 'baker'.
