MARATONA DELLA CITTÀ DI ROMA, Rome, Italy (March 25, 2001)

PHOTO ALBUM

Michele Tagliati, 2:59:11 (2:48:45 chip time), 295th overall, 65th M40-44

It was not an ideal day for running, with 70'F temperature and over 70% humidity, which is unusually hot even for Rome in March. Only 60% of the 10,000 participants completed the course, a rather low percentage even for us lazy Mediterranean people ... The start was just outside the Coliseum in an overcast morning and we quickly understood that our adventure would probably match the gladiators' epics.  After a mile or two we were already drenched in sweat for the heat and the humidity, and the frequent cobblestone tracts kept us very focused on our footsteps.  The first two thirds of the course were basically flat and touching beautiful spots such as the Tevere river banks and religious symbols like S.Peter Square and the Mosque. After a short loop through the old Olympic Village where Abebe Bikila probably spent some time back in 1960, we flanked the river back toward the historical center. Though technically difficult because of the cobblestones and frequent sharp bends, the course brought us through the baroque heart of Rome including Navona Square, Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. The final 10 kilometers were the toughest, not only because of the dreaded "wall" but because they included several uphill slopes that reminded me of dear Central Park ... The final mile was very exciting (in theory) as it ran through the ruins of ancient Rome, Caracalla's Baths and Circus Maximus to the finish line just after a loop around the Coliseum.

While the monumental frame of the course was without comparison, I have to say that the spectators' support could have been warmer and louder. Even in the historical center, there were long lonely tracts without anyone cheering us. On the other hand, you could hear some complaints coming from drivers forced to change their route ... Rome has to improve on this front if they want to bring this marathon in par with New York, Boston or London. Another minus sign was for the water tables, which were placed every three miles, too long of a distance especially in a hot day like yesterday. I was lucky to have some extra fluids provided by my brother Marco who was following the course on a bike.

As per my race, it was tough ... I proudly kept my master sub-3h streak alive with a decent -- in that condition -- 2h58:45 (chip time), but the last 10K were very painful. I was able to keep my "ideal" 2h53 pace for over 30K (1h26'40 at half way), but the cobblestones and the humidity made me pay a toll at the end. It took all of my "dignity" (to use Tony's words) over the last 5 miles to keep on going. Still, I didn't give up, helped by the constant encouragement of my brother and other friends along the route. To stay with the gladiators theme, heat and humidity were horrible beasts to fight, in particular after training at 30'F or less through the whole winter ... but as they say, "if it doesn't kill you it'll make you stronger".

And, although we didn't have the speediest of times, it was fast enough to come in first (according to the times for 4-person female posted on the NYRRC site) in our division!  Too bad this isn't an "official result." We just wanted someone to know!"

CLUB NIGHT GALA, New York City, NY (February 24, 2001)

The Central Park Track Club received the Men's Open 3rd place, Women's Open 4th place and Men's Masters 1st place awards.

Male 30-39 Runner of the Year: Toby Tanser

Summary: "1500 3:44 | 10K 28:45 | 10M 48:25 | Half 1:03:01 | Marathon 2:16:07.  Not enough space to list the NYRRC races he ran or won in 2000. His dedication is the year's highlight."

Toby Tanser On this website, there is plenty of space to list all of his victories this year:
  • Run for the Rainforest 5K, Central Park, NYC, April 22

  • L'Oréal Twosome 10K, Central Park, NYC, April 29

  • Flugleiðahlaupið 7 km, Reykjavik, Iceland, May 4

  • Hot Chocolate 15K, Central Park, NYC, December 2

  • Holiday Classic 5M, Prospect Park, December 3

  • Banchory & Stonehaven AC 3 Mile Boxing Day Run, Scotland, December 26

Technical note: We believe that there is at least one race missing (he won't tell us!).  As for the list of races that he ran (usually finishing in the top three), we really don't have space (we believe it is almost up to fifty) ...

Male 50-54 Runner of the Year: Alston Brown

Summary: "Personal Bests: Mile 4:28| 10K 37:00 | Half 1:18 | Marathon 2:35. Lists the 99 NYC Marathon as the toughest race he's ever run."

His personal best 10K time was listed as 37:00 in the summary biography.  With due respect, we note that his 10K split at the 2000 New York City Marathon was 36:38!  Also, it is difficult to figure out how someone's PR could be 2:35 at the marathon but 1:18 at the half marathon (2 x 1:18 = 2:36).

The award on this night was in consideration for his road racing accomplishments.  We duly note that at the USATF National Masters Track & Field Championships, this multi-talented man was
- 2nd in the 400m in 53.41
- 1st in the 800m in 2:09.26
- 1st in the 1500m in 4:28.66

Male 60-64 Runner of the Year: Sid Howard

Summary: "Personal Bests:10K 39:27| 10M 63:01.  Broke 60-64 Indoor 800m WR (2:14.75) on his 60th birthday. Holds outdoor WR (2:21.71)."

Sid Howard Here are the road running results for Sid this year:
  • Bermuda International 10K, 43:50, 1st
  • Gridiron Classic 5K, 20:17, 1st
  • Snowflake 4 Miler, 24:54, 1st
  • Cherry Blossom 10K, 39:53, 1st
  • Old Bridge 5K, 19:28, 1st
  • Ed Sherlock 5 Miler (Bahamas), 32:30, 1st
  • WABC Fight Against Prostate Cancer 5K, 19:17, 1st
  • Firecracker 4 Miler, 25:14, 1st
  • Club Championships, 32:13, 1st
  • Labor Day 5K (Plainfield), 18:53, 1st
  • George Sheehan Mile, 5:06.9, 2nd
  • Not Quite the New York City Marathon, 20:11, 1st
  • NYRRC Cross Country Championships, 21:00, 1st
  • USATF National Masters Cross Country Championships 5K, 20:53, 5th
  • Peter McArdle 15K, 1:10:48, 1st
  • Joe Kleinerman 10K, 40:19, 1st

Correction:  His personal best for a 10K is by far better than 39:27.  Although he does not boast about his times, once upon a time while driving back downtown from an Armory workout, he pointed to Amstersdam Avenue and said, "I once ran 34 minutes down this street in the Harlem 10K, and all I got was third place!"

We also had these individual nominees:
Peter Allen, Men 40-44
Stuart Calderwood, Men 40-44
Alan Ruben, Men 40-44
Robert Francis, Men 50-54
Stacy Creamer, Women 40-44
Carol Tyler, Women 60-64

I'd like to thank Michele Tagliati and Graeme Reid for pacing me for the first four loops, even though they threatened to charge $1 per mile, EACH! On top of that, I think I was the one providing the laughing-stock entertainment for THEIR morning run!

Comments by Michele Tagliati:

When Adam told me with enthusiastic pitch after the race on Saturday "I'm going to run the 50K tomorrow!", I initially thought he was totally out of his mind. But then, recognizing the true runner in him, Graeme and I decided to dedicate our (now ritual) Sunday long race to Adam's brave approach to ultramarathon.  It was bitterly cold at 9am, when we arrived at 102nd Street to meet Adam.  An interesting group of runners had gathered just where the East Drive bifurcate into the sweet downslope of the cutoff and the dreaded drive to the Harlem Hill. First of all they were less than the usual weekend race in the Park. Many less, not more than 100 people. They made us think of a pre-mass marathon era, maybe the first NYRRC races, the pioneers times of Corbitt and Lebow, when the NYC marathon course was entirely in the Park.  No Park Commissioner talks, no mats, no chips, not even a clear starting line. Even the runners were different, paradoxically less fit and competitive, they seemed more members of a religious sect gathering for some mysterious ritual in the open air than the high-tech sneakers wearing dudes who usually zoom around the Park.  A romantic view? Maybe, definitively bucolic and a bit "good old sixties".

After a few summary instructions from the officials, we started, flanking Adam on his way to run 50K. A beautiful sun failed to warm up the air, but at least made the Park's winter colors spectacular. The pace was not irresistible. We found ourselves among the first 5-8 runners despite a comfortable 7'15-7'30/mile pace. We tried (successfully?) to distract Adam and keep him relaxed, while providing some minor services like warming up for him the cups of solid ice served at the restoration tables ... After all, this was not an unusual situation for us. Adam and I have been "running buddies" during the past two years and Graeme has been a strong and pleasant "fixture" of weekend long runs in the last couple of months. In other words, there was more an atmosphere of long training run than racing. At some point we caught up with the runner in 5th position and started chatting with him. He had a nice Australian accent and told us he is preparing for Boston. He seemed relieved to know that only Adam was in the competition while the other two runners would soon fade away ...

I left the course after about 15 miles, as planned, though it took some self-discipline to give up that comfortable and exciting scene (Hey! we were talking 5th overall ...). I think Graeme continued for a few miles and left too. Adam continued on his regular pace and conquered his first ultramarathon, completing the 50K in less than 4 hours!! He called me at the end of his remarkable performance, when I had already completed my stretching exercises, took a warm shower and almost finished lunch ... I was so proud of him! Not to mention that he was able to defend his 5th place overall, quite an accomplishment for a rookie!!

THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY  (eyewitness report)

The Good
Erik Goetze and Rob Zand: Solid 3000m race, 8:59 and 9:05 respectively. The two ran the entire race without competition as their heat turned out to have much slower runners. The Zand master, who set the pace for 2600m later said: "I could have done that with Erik at the Armory" - Good Work by the two.

The Bad
Kim Mannen: Was on pace for a "pr" before deciding to take a couple of major detours half way into the race. With 200m left, the lady fell off the 60 degrees banked turns of the BU track, took at least two steps on the infield before casually hopping back onto the track -running time 1:48 ( still on pace for a "pr" ). Another detour followed on the final turn, after which she decided to walk home. Stay on the track!

The Ugly
Isaya Okwiya and Steve Sipe: I mean, how ugly can it get? Steve Sipe shows up in his warm up suit with his heat ready to go, changed at the starting line before a giant Gorilla hoped onto his back.  Isaya was on a sub 2:20 pace at the half before he started sucking wind big time. Hallo! I thought that only happened at Van Cortlandt Park. Very ugly performance.

KANAGAWA MARATHON (21K), Kanagawa, Japan (February 4, 2001)

Charles Allard Jr. writes: "Well, I finally participated in a 2001 race.  Actually, I have secured a place in the London Marathon through the benefice of Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital (anyone who wants to sponsor me even for a buck or two is very welcome) and I figured I should at least participate in a race or two as a warm-up, even if not at full pace.  Under partly cloudy skies, I managed a very evenly paced 1:23:37 to place 380/3266 overall and 146/1113 age group.   There were over 3,000 runners, making it a large road race and awards given were: Kanagawa Marathon Cup, the Governor of Kanagawa's Cup and the Kanagawa News Paper's Cup.

But what is it about Japanese road races?  Did I just forget the incongruity of it all?  The race has been sponsored for 20 years by Nissin Salad Oil.  Yes, the finishing prize for all was a bottle of salad oil, which in retrospect is quite useful compared to the other things that I have received in races (like a bridle-bit for a horse).  The course was run in a highly industrialised area. We started in front of a train station on the Nissin Salad Oil factory grounds, ran along a two-story highway past an unloading dock full of "Safety First!" signs, past a gas-fired electricity plant, through a sewage-treatment facility out along the highway to Ishikawa-Harima Heavy Industry's factory and to the finish. Can you absorb toxic chemicals through your race shoes?  I wondered.  As always, it is the volunteers who make it worthwhile.  This time a creative aid station outfitted its staff with butterfly nets. The volunteers were actively catching the water cups as these were thrown away. A nice distraction.

I will sign off with a koan. If one enters a race but runs it only as a training run, is it a race?"

Historical footnote:

  • Noah Perlis: "The reported time for the recent Thursday night 800m for me appears to be wrong.  I believe I was the 2:38.5 in that race and the officials got me in the wrong place with the person ahead of me who was in 2:32. The good part is that I may do the 2:32 next time because I sprinted hard in the final stretch after having gone out too conservatively.  Or else I may go out faster next time and crawl in like I did last year in the same 2:38 for my yearly 'this is why I don't run anything over 400' reminder race."

Technical note: Both the flying SC's were stricken with illnesses, making the mere completion of a half marathon a sterling effort.
