FAIRFIELD HALF MARATHON, Fairfield, CT (June 25, 2000)

Hank Berkowitz, 1:21:02 (6:12 min/mile), 23rd place overall
David Monti, 1:30:37 (6:56 min/mile), 87th place overall
Jane Harris, 1:43:14 (7:53 min/mile), 289th place overall

In Runner's World, David Monti reported: "Ben Kimondiu came back to the Anthem Fairfield Half-Marathon in Fairfield, Conn., with hopes of winning the race for the second time. Mary-Lynn Currier came to gauge the progress of her comeback after dropping out of the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials last February. I came back to see if I could still run a half-marathon.

On my last trip to this shoreline race in 1996, I didn't run a step. Instead, I rode in the lead truck, and reported on the race for Runner's World OnLine. Honest work, but nothing like what I did this year.

With only about 20 miles per week of training under my belt, and my last half-marathon some 12 years in the rear view mirror, I threw myself at the mercy of this challenging course. I proceeded to get tag-teamed by the hills of neighboring Southport and temperatures that reached a sweltering 85 degrees. But like the scripted losers in professional wrestling, I fought back anyway.

Early in the race the cloud cover was thick, and I felt well in control passing the two mile mark in 13:13. Through mile six I was averaging 6:38 per mile, and was feeling pretty good.

"Conserve," I advised a woman next to me whose breathing was labored. I think I was really advising myself. I was sensing trouble was ahead. When the sun broke through, it hit us like a hammer, and the pace which seemed so comfortable thirty minutes ago suddenly became difficult.

It was during that rough patch that I was joined by Arthur Nager of nearby Westport. We ran in lock step, past the tidy, and sometimes stately, homes which are amongst the most expensive in the region. We hardly noticed, heads down, completely soaked from both our own perspiration and the sprinklers set up along the course.

We were joined by Seth Schild of Mohegan Lake, N.Y. Arthur and I picked up to stay with him, running single file back to the finish at Jennings Beach. Then Seth accelerated and left me, and soon thereafter, Arthur slowly came around me, too. Stick a fork in me; I was done.

I gave a sheepish wave when the P.A. announcer said, "Here comes David Monti of Race Results Weekly!" I crossed the line in 1:30:36, a personal worst, and some 26 minutes behind Ben Kimondiu, who had defended his 1999 title in 1:04:12. Kimondiu had prevailed in a four-man sprint in the Beach parking lot after trailing late in the race.

Mary-Lynn Currier, who had recently moved back to Connecticut from Massachusetts, also had a great homecoming. A last-minute entrant, she dominated the women's race to win by over a minute."

RANDOLPH CLASSIC,  Randolph H.S., NJ (June 24, 2000)

  • Richard Hamner, 400m 1st 55-59, 56.57 (F.A.T - Fully Automatic Timing - slower than hand-timing) (PR) in an outstanding effort with his first 200 split announced at 26.2 (which would also be a PR for the 200)).

  • Noah Perlis
    - 100m hurdles 1st
    - 100m 2nd
    - 400m 5th

Mathematically, it appears that Noah has clinched the USATF-NJ 2000 Grand Prix Sprinter (all races of 400m and under) of the Year Award for combined ages 50-59 by having won a total of 8 races in the 3 Grand Prix Meets so far this year (Indoor and Outdoor NJ Championships and today's meet). There is only one meet left in the series and he has 55 points with the closest competitor at 24 points.  Even though some of the races were uncontested in his age bracket (50-54), there is some benefit apparently for consistency of effort.

Here are notes:

  • Yes, Ramon Bermo's name appeared in four of the legs on two different teams.  He needs all the extra mileage he can get, because he is training to run a 3:30 marathon.  This is no easy matter, since he just ran the Boston Marathon in 2:47.  By his calculations, he should have no speed left by the time the Club Championships come around.  He has determined that the ideal pace for his marathon run in the Ironman USA should be 8 minute miles, since that pace would have enabled him to pass many people whereas anyone thinking that they can run a sub-3 hour race would be a fool if last year was any experience.
  • Victor Vulskans does track training with Peter Allen in New Jersey. He was entered to do the marathon as part of his ironman training but decided that two legs on the prestigious Central Park Track Club relay team was a much better idea.
  • Judd Allen is Peter's brother and lives in Burlington.  Anne Ratchbun is  his girlfriend and Nicole Maxwell is their friend.

Toby Tanser was first across the finish line, but was not eligible for the awards which are given only to people judged to be wearing business attire.  Toby was wearing an orange jumpsuit from the Bergen County Jail and carrying a briefcase with the words "Inside Trader."  As the saying goes, the judges were not amused.  Julia Casals was fifth female in the race.

Tyronne Culpepper wrote: "I did this last year & it was fun, so I decided to do it again.  I think everybody should do it at least once.  It's a funny feeling running in business attire through the Wall Street area.  Some of the various comments from onlookers were: 'Hey you dropped your pen!' ando me specifically "Hey, alright man, you're the first brother in a suit!!!!"  I was the 5th or 6th suit person overall in 14:20.

The live report from our Global Surveillance System (TM) goes as follows:

Stacy Creamer, fresh off 3rd-place overall finishes in the Manhattan and Bronx biathlons (and Masters' wins both times), went one better by winning the Queens Biathlon women's race outright on Sunday.   She led virtually wire-to-wire, winning the first 3-mile run and leading throughout the 19-mile bike ride.   She was passed briefly in the second transition, but quickly reestablished and then widened her lead. She won in 1:36:36 in wet conditions--slick roads made the many 180-degree turns on the bike course particularly dangerous.   Stacy has been swimming and cycling almost daily to compensate for her inability to run (much) due to a heel injury; cross-training seems to agree with her, and so does the borough of Queens, which she seems unable to visit without winning a race there (see Skaggs-Walsh 5K race on April 15th).

Margaret Nolan was the third-place finisher in the Women's 40-44 division, improving considerably on her Bronx biathlon debut. She proved yet again that multiple major responsibilities (children, job, CPTC dance parties) are no obstacle to the truly dedicated.

In the men's race, Stuart Calderwood led from the gun and finished the first run with a 20-second lead, but was then handicapped by three decidedly amateurish moves in the first transition area.  First, he put his left bike shoe on his right foot. This discovered, he dressed correctly and promptly mounted his bicycle in the forbidden transition zone, where bikes must be walked.  At the yells of the officials, he tried to stop--and fell into a rack of competitors' bikes, receiving road rash on his hip and knee.  Undaunted (well, a little daunted), he successfully exited the transition area in sixth place, and promptly rode past the first turnaround cone.  Redirected yet again by the hardworking race officials, he completed the cycling leg without further incident other than being put in his place (12th) by some serious cyclists. After a remarkably normal second transition, he took some revenge during the second run and moved into 7th place, where he finished, a bit worse for wear, in 1:28:39, winning the 40-44 age-group, and in time to watch Stacy bury the field in the women's race. He is now reportedly doing intensive transition workouts in which he will learn to make sense of simple verbal instructions on the first try and distinguish between his right and left shoes with lightning-fast accuracy.

CORPORATE CHALLENGE RACE # 1, Central Park, NYC (May 10, 2000)

Yesterday, it was a sunny, hot day with bad air quality.  Today, it was cold, windy, rainy, dark (except for the lightning bolts) and loud (from the thunderclaps).  This race actually consists of separate races for men and women, and the times are not recorded except for the top finishers.  We don't know how our people did, but we know one team member finished first in both the men's race and the women's race!  It was Guillermo Rojas, who had the distinguished job of riding the official lead bicycle to guide the race leaders!  G'mo said, "During the last mile of the women's race, it wasn't just heavy rain, but it was as if someone just opened up a row of faucets and the water just came gushing down.  I could not see anything behind me in that rain, and I could only hope that Kari Ann Bertrand was somewhere there."

Yves-Marc Courtines ran 21:52, and was the fourth finisher on the 5-person Donaldson, Lufkin and Jenrette team that finished second in the men's race.  On his team, the first three finishers were 3rd, 7th and 8th overall in the race but since they are not members of our club, you will never find out from us who they were.

Tyronne Culpepper wrote: "Of course, I always find myself running these things when I say long beforehand that I'm not. Well, the race was exciting as I found myself making it a fun run, after an initial mile that wasn't what I expected.  It rained as usual & I had to do something soon after the run and missed out on the spread provided by my company.  Later,  I was awarded a goodie basket as our 1st male finisher w/ a time of 22:42."

Option 1: Julie is the Beauty and Scott is the Beast --- obvious but boring concept!
Option 2: Julie is the Beast and Scott is the Beauty --- interesting!
Option 3: Julie is the Beauty and Julie is the Beast --- much more interesting!
Option 4: The island of St. Croix is the Beauty and the one-mile steep hill in the bike leg is the Beast --- probably true, but much less interesting than any of the preceding options.

Julie read the above and commented, "I thought it was pretty funny but for the fact that I was the Beast in two out of the four choices."

Question from Noah Perlis Answer
You reported Ramon Bermo having run a half-marathon on May 7th at 6:02  per mile pace. Is this the same Ramon Bermo who ran the L'Oréal 10k on April 29th at a 7:46 per mile pace? Yes, this is the one and only Ramon "Raqui" Bermo.  Upon information and belief, he would have ran the full marathon if only he had not gone for a 6 hour training trip consisting of 82 miles on the bike and a 6 mile run on the day before.
Is one of these an imposter, and if so, which one? They are both the real thing.  However, he ran the twosome in his role as the coach of the NYU Running Club and the half marathon as a member of the Central Park Track Club.
Was the half-marathon all downhill? No, there are no significant mountains on Long Island.

NYHRC TREADMILL 10K,  New York City, NY (May 4, 2000)

Frank Handelman wrote: "Last week, I ran my first treadmill race and I want to recommend it to CPTC'ers for next year.  The New York Health and Racquet Club sponsored a 10 kilometer against time in order to benefit Pediatric AIDS research.  One of the age groups fitted me perfectly --- men 51 and over (even Jack Brennan couldn't have beat me since the event took place a few days before his 51st birthday).  Ordinarily, I hate treadmill running, and do it only in the worst of weather, or to jog a slow mile or two the day before a race.  The most I can usually do is a very slow 30 minutes --- which I call three miles even if I'm going about 4 miles an hour.

Anyway, I saw the listing at my local NYHRC and gave it a go.  The "race" completed my own weird little seven day triathlon --- the Penn Relays 4x400, the L'Oréal Twosome 2 Mile Race, then the treadmill 10K.  I was kept very good company at the ungodly (for me) hour of 9am by the race director, Charles, and a NYHRC executive, Tom, on the adjoining machine.  I started with a 7:04 mile, slowly upped the ante, and ended with a 5:00 mile --- when I saw that I could break 40:00, I got greedy. My time was 39:46, and at the end I was so pooped that I needed help to hit the button to slow the pace.

Why this long report? To both encourage people to do it in 2001 (the best of causes, great prizes, and I'll make sure to post it when it comes up) and to note that this treadmill stuff can be very good conditioning on its own terms.  Remember, Christine Clark from Alaska won the recent Olympic marathon trials after reportedly doing 90% of her training on the treadmill."

Flugleiðahlaupið 7 km, Reykjavík, Iceland (May 4, 2000)

Toby Benjamin Tanser, 22:09, 1st place

EATING RUNNING SHOES:  Dear reader, have you ever seen someone eat his running shoes?  Well, Toby Tanser has issued this challenge to us, "Next week I shall be flying the Central Park Track Club ORANGE abroad in two races. If you find both races, I will eat my running shoes."  So we are looking for information from anyone and everyone (his travel agent, his doorman, his postman, the Iceland Consulate visa control officer, Icelandair reservations agents, the webmaster at www.hlaup.is and all others) to help us identify those two races.  This is your chance to get even with all those unsolvable quizzes of his.  We promise that the eating will be a very public affair.  P.S.  Note that while he failed to specify the exact quantity, but we can still hold him to two at a minimum and they don't even have to be from his sponsor Nike.

Among the many people who wrote back to help us on this matter was Toby Tanser himself: "Out at Sea, or wherever I may be, number 1 is a or c.  Secondary Q is perhaps A Not B, which gives the same for #3.  The fourth should also be out to C and for the fifth there'll never Be."  Why are we getting a headache from just looking at it ...?

But, whatever that clue is, we have solved Part I through sheer diligence: Flugleiðahlaupið 7 km, Reykjavík, Iceland (May 4, 2000), Toby Benjamin Tanser, 22:09, 1st place.

Unfortunately, as hard as we tried, we could not locate the second race.  We were correct in focussing our search space on Scandanavia, but the venerable www.marathon.se did not publish the results.  Toby explained: "It was an obscure, but competitive race.  Danderydsloppet in Stockholm on May 1st.  The winner was an American from Albuquerque.  I was second - too bad!"  So we'll call this a draw.

Special time trial:  As you can tell from these splits, the times at the start are subject to delays due to the mass congestion.  Therefore, the better (and more amusing) test must be, "Who ran the fastest final 2.2 kilometers?"  Answer:  Craig Chilton (8:27), Rich Hollander (9:02), Margaret Angell (9:27), Adam Newman (9:36), Fasil Yilma (9:43), Ramon Bermo (9:52), Catherine Goodrich (10:00), David Howard (10:03), Sarah Gross (10:12), Julie & Robert Francis (10:14), Gordon Streeter (10:37), Eve Kaplan (10:38), Olivier Baillet (10:41), Tyronne Culpepper (10:54), Mary Messite (10:55), Etsuko Kizawa (11:20), Noel Comess (11:27), Kim Mannen (11:40), Bola Awofeso (12:18).

Technical note:  In defense of the pedestrian times for our star runners, you should note the presence of the name 'Mountain' in the race name.  Also noteworthy is the presence of "Suicide Hill" on the course.  Additionally, there was an hour bike time trial immediately preceding the run for those preparing for Lake Placid Ironman.  And finally, there were the activities of the day before which included Queens 1/2 or 4+ hour bike for some.  And then, of course, there is the best excuse --- some of them insist that they are not real runners ...

Herb Schon writes: "The New Mexico Cycling Season is rolling into full swing and I'm rolling with it. The trials for the New Mexico Senior Olympics took place on April 13-14 and I gathered a clean sweep of firsts in the mile, 5K, 10K, and 40K time trials as well as in the 20K road race.  This was followed a week later (April 22nd) with an age group first place in the New Mexico State Championships in the 20K time trial."

URBAN ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGE, Van Cortlandt Park, NYC (April 9th, 2000)

This note came from Jonathan Federman, "I did the Urban Environment Challenge on April, 9.  A small, but hearty field got to enjoy Van Cortlandt Park in the snow. A much better place to be than Central Park.  I finished in 48:11 for 36th place overall.  I didn't stay around for all the awards and final standings, but the carrot cakes went to all the top finishers."
