Historical note: The winner of the CEO division was Tom Phillips
of Deja News. Some
years ago, Tom was the publisher of the now defunct Spy magazine
and routinely won the CEO division of the Corporate Challenge by
a zillion yards. To level the playing field, the NYRRC instituted
a rule whereby corporations had to meet minimum revenue requirements
to qualify their CEOs, thereby excluding Tom. So many years
after, he has now come back to haunt the Corporate Challenge once
more.
Technical note: Observers on the race course informed us that,
during women's race, the winner Kari Ann Bertrand was escorted
by a lead car as usual. She had a comfortable winning margin
of over one minute. Behind her, the other lead women were
escorted by motorcycle cops. Still, no sooner had the slower
men parted for the motorcycles did they coalesce again afterwards.

HELLGATE 5K, Astoria, Queens, NYC (June 20th, 1999)
Monica Bonamego, 19:34 (PR)
This is a almost completely flat and straight course (3/4 miles
north, 3/4 miles east, 3/4 miles south, 3/4 miles west, finish on
a track), and therefore makes for very fast times for tempo runners.
This also makes for a very competitive field because everybody wants
a fast time somewhere (outside of Central Park). The female
winner finished in about 17:XX.

COOK YOUR BUNS 3-MILER, Old Greenwich, CT (June 18th, 1999)
Adam Newman, 17:08, 11th out of 700-plus
Peter Gambaccini, 19:07, 51st out of 700-plus
Our running writer Peter Gambaccini wrote: "This is
a 6:30 p.m. Friday race down along normally exclusive Connecticut
shorefront. The course is a mix of grass, packed dirt, pavement,
and a little bit of beach. And there's an enormous feed afterward.
Nobody larger than me beat me. Three days later, my hamstrings
are still screaming. CPTCers should road trip en masse
to this one next year; it's great fun. Stopped in a faded
cutoff orange CPTC t-shirt, coming in around 20:10, was '80s superstar
and heartthrob Curtis Fletcher, who now resides in Cos Cob,
CT."
Of course, Peter Gambaccini has been known to have a fondness
for this particular race. We found that in the May/June 1998
issue of New York Runner, he selected this race as a Great
Reason to Leave New York for the Weekend. Here was his
endorsement message: "Tod's Point is the coveted strand of
beach that documentarian Michael Moore tried to liberate
from the locals on his short-lived TV Nation program.
But you can park and play there without controversy at Cook Your
Buns, a sensational Friday night kickoff to a summer weekend.
The race, which is preceded by a one-miler for kids, is a less-than-taxing
three-miler that's half on grass and packed sand trails and half
on pavement, with nary a hill around. Your entry fee then
entitles you to a barbecue where Race Director Mickey Yardis
and his crew fire up four grills with 200 pounds of hamburgers and
1,000 hot dogs, with salad and watermelon included."
He went on to recommend, in reckless disregard of the loss in American
worker productivity, "Sneak out of work early with a couple
of buddies and squeeze in a post-race and pre-chow swim."

Herb Schon, former CPTC runner and present spouse of

Susan Komen Bike for the Cure 55 mile road cycling event in New
Mexico on 6/13/99. Finishing time was 3:12:56. That same weekend
found another former CPTC'er, Steve Kelton, paying a visit
to Herb in Santa Fe. Steve now plays in Steamboat Springs, CO and
considers road racing boring, preferring scabby, mountain bike legs
to sleek and colorful jerseys.

TDI MUSEUM 5K RUN, Central Park, NYC (June 9th, 1999)
This is a fun run, so that there are no officially recorded times.
Of all the races that our web photographer did not cover, this is
the one that he really wished he were there. The particular
attraction of this race was that there was a blank area on the race
bib for the runner to do some artwork. Wouldn't it have been
wonderful to document all that?
The Central Park Track Club leader in this race was Craig Chilton,
who finished seventh overall. Also seen were Michele Tagliati,
John Gleason, John Megaw, Tyronne Culpepper, Frank Schneiger, Eden
Weiss, Kim Mannen, Diane Lebowitz, Laura Miller and Irene
Jackson-Schon.
Spectator Stacy Creamer proudly said, "Hey, I didn't
run this race." This must have been the first time in
many weeks that she has been able to make a statement of this sort.
Other spectators included Ross Galitsky and (of course) Bola
Awofeso.

- Here is the real scoop about how the two-pack-a-day-smoker Brian
Barry did it: "Originally, Frank Schiro planned
for me to run 80 seconds in the first lap and then 79 seconds.
He said that he would yell out my 400m split. When the race
started, I followed somebody else and I went through the first
lap in 76 seconds. Frank was smart enough not to yell out
the split time, because he thought I might be demoralized.
When I got to 600m, Ed Gonera was there yelling at me to
pump my arms. When I got to 700m, Alan Bautista was
there yelling at me to kick it in. I did the last lap in
a very hard 84 seconds."

Stuart made it to the half mile mark in 2:27, but his calf seized
up and he couldn't go on. He stopped for about 5 minutes,
then began to jog along the course so that he'd be able to cheer
for the returning CPTCers along the partially out-and-back course.
He stopped again about a quarter mile past the finish line to root
for the orange, then went on to complete the course himself.

- This is the team debut in a NYRRC scoring race for Erik Goetze,
Gordon Streeter and Chris Taylor. The cliché
is "an auspicious start."
- This is Stacy Creamer first sub-6 minute/mile 5K.
This is also Audrey Kingsley's first sub-19 minute 5K.
But the most impressive female 5K is Ana Echeverri's one
minute improvement over her previous PR of 22:39 at the Skagg-Walsh
5K only recently on April 18th.
- Historical note: On February 14th, in one of most exciting finishes
ever, Carsten Strandlod and Tyronne Culpepper both
set PRs of 17:50 at the Valentine's Day 5K. Carsten has
always insisted that his margin of victory was more like 10 seconds,
not the tied time as listed by the NYRRC. On March 28th,
now running by himself and quite unmotivated, Carsten crawled
in at 18:45. He has since then fled the country. On
this day, now running by himself and extremely unmotivated, Tyronne
jogged in at 19:58. He said, "I was really trying to
run 20:00 exact. Unfortunately, they gave me two seconds
and also not in the usual direction." While we preach
that your teammates make you better, we don't often say the converse
--- you are lost without your teammates!
This note came flying in from the cold: "Hi there, I must
say that I'm pleased not to be forgotten completely, even though
I do not appreciate the tone in which I'm mentioned. I did
not crawl to the finish line in 18:45 --- the course was the hardest
one inside Central Park! Anyway, I'm pleased to announce
that my change of scenery has done me some good because I have
won my first race. A very low-keyed race, but still a race.
Don't bother looking for the website since they have none.
It was a 10K and I cruised to victory in 37:51. Since then,
I have finished 3rd. in a half marathon with prize money.
I think I will turn pro as soon as I get back from Malawi.
All the best to everyone. Carsten Strandlod" Shall
we add, "Tyronne, eat your heart out"?
This led Tyronne Culpepper to philosophize: "Some
people will do anything for hardware, even if it involves traveling
almost around the world. But I guess we should believe you,
since your time wasn't very fast:-)." Shall we add,
"Tyronne is eating his heart out!"

- Scott Willett's time was only 2 seconds behind the winner.
This race was done in waves, so that Scott did not know
about this very small differential, otherwise he would have used
his vaunted track speed to kick in.
- For the record, J.P. Cheurvront was tied up at the registration
table. By the time that he got his race number, he had all
of seven minutes to set up his bike, change clothes, slip
into his wet suit and get into the water before the first wave
was started. He wants to make sure that you know this.
Obviously, deep in his heart, he knew that he would have won this
race otherwise ...

Bola Awofeso wrote: "Hi, have you ever run a 2:40:32
marathon? Well, I now have, or at least that is what my finishing
photo will show (editor's note: but can you see him in this photo?).
It was an unbelievable experience --- the first leg (3.3 mile) run
by Andreas Nolte; second leg (7.6 mile) by Gordon Streeter;
third leg (5.5 mile) by Thomas Pennell; fourth leg (4.1mile)
again by Andreas ; and the anchor leg (5.6 mile) by me. Ana
and Eve travelled with me, and we were all concerned about not letting
the team down. In my case, I was probably even more worried
about our women's team passing me at the last leg!
I was hoping that we would run under 2:40 but the A-Team sabotaged
us by making me run over 3 miles to the exchange point instead of
taking the bus. During that run, I remember Peter Allen
telling me this was good for me. I said, "Three miles
might be good for me, but not at this pace!" Well, suffice
to say I was tired before beginning on my leg and even more tired
after the first mile because I was foolish enough to think I would
be able to catch Erin Sullivan (editor's note: Erin is a
legendary female national high school cross-country champion from
upstate New York) who left 4 minutes ahead of me. In the final
800m, two things happened which I will never forget --- (1) Stuart
Calderwood and Alan Ruben saw me and Alan got very excited
and said something like, "O my God! That's Bola!" and
they both started to give me instructions; (2) then the crowd got
so loud that I thought someone was gaining on me and I ended up
running my fastest 800m ever. After the race results were
posted, I realized that the next runner was 2 minutes behind."
*********************************************
From the Marathon Special Supplement in The Burlington
Free Press, we read these excerpts:
"Our team got off to a fast start," said Stuart
Calderwood, who carried the lead through the second leg for
Central Park. "We had a first runner (Alan Ruben)
we weren't sure of but he ran the race of his life to give us
the lead, which gave me the pressure of keeping the lead.
Not easy."
While Calderwood gave the New Yorkers a 15-second advantage after
11 miles, in the third leg, Ski Rack's Randy Sightler blistered
the course to put his team in front. By the time he reached
the end of his stage at the top of Battery Hill, Sightler had
his team ahead by almost a minute. The victory was nothing
new for the team for Sightler. Central Park was a distant
second in a time of 2:26:27.
"What I think about them is that they're younger than us,
so it doesn't count," said Calderwood, jokingly, as he referred
to the Ski Rack team.
Central Park won redemption when its women's team claimed the
women's open relay championship in a time of 3:02:41.
Comment: The Central Park Track Club brand of wacky humor as presented
by Stuart Calderwood apparently went over like a ton of bricks
with that reporter ... but the regular visitors of this website
will have no doubt enjoyed Stuart's comments tremendously.
Historical note: The reporter referred to the official lineup
of the team, which named Alan Ruben, Stuart Calderwood,
Paul Stuart-Smith, Ramon Bermo and Peter Allen,
and he assumed that the lead runner was Alan Ruben.
We actually ran a slightly different team. The actual lead
runner Craig Chilton said, "I am glad that it was Alan
Ruben's name that was printed in the newspaper. Better
him than me, in this case."

We don't know what 'pectoral' stands for either, so don't ask us
...
Michele Tagliati comes to the rescue: "Pettorale"
in Italian stands for "Bib" number and it is so called
because of its usual location over the chest ("petto"
in Italian). I guess that the organizers of the legendary
100 Km del Passatore transliterated "Pettorale"
into "Pectoral", generating the perplexed comments
of the web-site guy ...

Diane Lebowitz wrote us: "By the first mile, which
I ran in 6:40, I had built up an insurmountable lead. Unfortunately,
when I reached what should have been the turnaround point on West
Drive, one of the police in the lead car leaned out the window and
said to me "Is this it ?" I said to him, "YOU
tell ME !! Where do I GO ???". The lead car then
proceeded past the turnaround point, leading me all the way uphill,
far beyond the turnaround point. When they finally realized
that I had been lead far off course, someone jumped out of the car
and told me that the turnaround was back at the bottom of the hill.
I turned around to see all of the other runners being turned around
at the correct point at the bottom of the hill, while I had been
denied what surely would have been a once in a lifetime chance for
me to cross the finish line first in an all womens' event.
Devastated, I tried in vain to close the gap, but I had been lead
so far off course that it was impossible. After the race I
told race officials what had occurred, and they promised to send
me a letter of apology. Unfortunately, as my 40th birthday
approaches and I have to work harder and harder to run 5K's under
7 min/mile, I fear that the chance that I had, and lost, on Saturday
is one that I will never have again. I just thought someone
should know. Thank you for your patience. Diane."
Dear Diane: I am truly sorry to hear this. After the 5K race
started, someone told me that he saw you leading the race.
Later, I found out that your listed results was 4th place in 24:08.
I was rather surprised with both the place as well as the time,
because you ran 22:10 at the Women's Sports & Fitness 5K
just two weeks ago. That time (for a course which includes
Cat Hill) was significantly faster than the winning time of 22:59
in this race. Now your note has explained this disastrous
turn of events. The unfortunate part is that it was really
not hard for the NYRRC to make sure that someone in the lead car
knew where to go. A letter of apology is hardly any consolation.
We want you to know that, in our hearts, you won that race, and
we will always remember it that way.

Carsten Strandlod, 3:32:04, 299th M30-34
The posting of this race result is sufficiently startling that
people (including his wife) have asked us about our discovery process.
Ordinarily, we would have smiled smugly and declined to answer,
in line with our obnoxious persona. But for your edification
just this once, here is how we tracked it down. We knew that
Carsten was going to do this race on this weekend. Since he
would not be back for a few days, we could not ask him. Besides,
even if we did ask him, he would probably just smirk and decline
comment. We were totally unfamiliar with running websites
in Denmark, so there was no obvious starting point. We got
on www.altavista.com and we typed "copenhagen
marathon". The first site listed was Sparta, a running
club in Denmark. We went to their website www.sparta.dk.
The fact that we know no Danish did not not deter us, because
we noted that one menu item says "Resultatlister".
When we clicked on that, we found that the Copenhagen Marathon results
were listed under either "kvinder" or "mænd".
When we clicked on "kvinder", we saw nothing but female
first names (Anna, Mette, Linda, Christina, Louise, Karen, Britt,
etc). When we clicked on "mænd", we saw male first
names. So we started to search for the occurrence of the name
"Carsten". We couldn't believe how many Carstens
were in the race, but eventually we found our man. So, there
you have it. Just another day at the office ...
When Mette Strandlod read the above, she asked: "I looked
at the Sparta webpage too. While I am very impressed with your skills
in Danish, I was just wondering why you didn't click on the British
flag in the upper left corner to direct you to ... ???? Right ...
everything in English!? Still, why take that extra step when you
did perfectly fine in Danish!?"
The website guy's response was as follows: "I am Australian,
so there is no chance that I would associate the British flag with
the English language ... ya da ya da ya da ..."

- All three individuals above are listed as being from a place

- Stuart's time and position must be asterisked for the following
reasons. When the race began, a couple of teenagers charged
out really fast in the lead, but Stuart had passed them within
a mile. When Stuart got to what was supposedly the one-mile
turnaround, he saw a clock and assumed that that would be the
exact halfway point. So he got up to the clock and turned
around, only to find that the other runners had made their turn
at an earlier point and that they now had a 60 meter lead on him.
Ultimately, Stuart finished in second place behind a nineteen-year-old.
These circumstances were recorded on videotape. The race
director offered his apologies but could not change the results.
- Shane Creamer started to get congratulations phone calls
the next day. He wondered, "How did they find out about
this?" It's the website, Mr. Creamer.

- This long distance race had to take place on the first warm
and humid day of the year. The ground was wet from yesterday's
rain and the water evaporated in the morning sunshine.
Most runners have not yet been conditioned to these conditions.
Several of our runners experienced different degrees of physical
discomfort. We thank Audrey Kingsley in particular
for doing this race so soon after the hot-weathered Boston Marathon
to help the team place third.
- Right before the race, Sylvie Kimché was observed to
go by in her team singlet. This rare sight caused a teammate
to say, "Hey, Sylvie, it's great to see you racing again.
And in a half marathon no less!" Sylvie said, "Take
a good look! I have no race number. I am only here
to cheer my team!"

- Stuart Calderwood's time should be asterisked by the
fact that he finished ahead of top local master Paul Mascali.
- When advised "Give yourself a break -- you just ran Boston!",
Randy Ehrlich said "So what?" with a shrug.
Doctor knows best ...
- Audrey Kingsley suffered a near-incapacitating fit of
hysterics when she saw Stacy appear at the Engineer's Gate at
90th Street in second place. Her shrieks of glee are presently
halfway to the moon and will be heard in New Zealand tomorrow
morning.
There is a set of correspondence on the subject of pacing.
Many of you have already read it. Due to its extreme length,
we have moved it to a separate page (last updated 5/29/1999) in order to minimize
downloading time for people who are just looking for race results.

- Jose La Salle summarized his race succintly with these
initial splits: mile 1 in 7:44 and mile 2 in 6:01. It is
not hard to fill in the blanks yourself ...
- Arthur Cooke wrote: "It was windy out there as well
but not quite as windy as the infamous Queens half-marathon wind-tunnel
effect on the 20th Avenue straight-away. I ran with Jose for the
first few miles, but I couldn't keep up after 6 miles. He,
however, went out too fast and was walking by mile 18. Overall
it wasn't bad, a learning experience. It was my second
marathon and I didn't improve over last year's time (I ran Philly)
as I'd hoped. My training laxed over the last month and
a half, as I said, a learning experience."

- While Audrey Kingsley's time was a technical PR, we should
note a couple of things. On one hand, she has run only one
other 2 Miler in her life and that was a long time ago, so that
anything she does now is virtually guaranteed to be a PR.
On the other hand, 6:30 min/mile pace is slower than her sub-40
minute 10K race pace.

- Alan Ruben was 55th overall and 8th M40-49
- While Alan Ruben has the reputation of being able to
run even splits (1:15:12 + 1:15:37 this time), the eight 5K splits
for David Newcomb and Gordon Streeter are quite
impressive --- their slowest 5K was 20:17 and their fastest was
19:56, quite oblivious to any change in terrain. But, please,
no S&M bondage jokes about them!
- Ramon Bermo had a time 1:39:58 at 25K and dropped out.
Why? After starting out the first 5K in 17:57, his
20K-to-25K split was 25:54. Ouch! (Disclaimer: Ramon
said, "I had started walking by mile 14, so that last 5K
was not as slow as it seems.")
- Fasil Yilma's time needs to be asterisked, because he
probably spent 6 minutes overall with his usual leg stretching
multiple times.
- No time is listed so far for Audrey Kingsley (bib# 2616).
What happened to her? Did she overtrain? Did
she miss the airplane to Boston? Did she miss the train
to Boston? Did she miss the boat to Boston? Did she
go to the wrong city? Did she oversleep for this noon race?
Did a ski-masked Tyronne Culpepper whack her knee with
a tire iron? No, none of the above is true. Audrey
just did not have her computer chip at the start of the race!!!
It will take some time for her official time to be sorted out.
Unofficially, she finished in 3:03:XX and about 50th place.
- Roster of non-running Central Park Track Club people seen around
the course: Bola Awofeso, Blair Boyer, Stuart Calderwood, Stacy
Creamer, Craig Buckbee, Ana Echeverri, Ross Galitsky, Scott Willett.
- Teamwise, the men's "A" team finished in 7th place,
the men's "B" team in 32nd place and the women's team
(after clearing up that technical problem concerning our lead
runner) in 8th place. How good was 7th place? Well,
some team named 'Ethiopia' was the 2nd place team ...

- The time for Tim Evans needs to be double-asterisked,
because he arrived two minutes late for the start.
- Our team rep Sarah Gross expressed thanks to all those
women who forsake the half marathon to run the 5K scoring race
instead. She added, "If you really missed running the
half, you will get your chance on May 9th at the next scoring
race, the Women's Half Marathon in Central Park!"

CRESCENT CITY CLASSIC 10K,
New Orleans, LA (April 17th, 1999)
John Sargent wrote: "I ran my first 10K this past weekend
in New Orleans. I was down there for a conference last week/weekend
and coincidentally it was the same weekend as the Crescent City
Classic 10K which they advertised as the largest 10K in the Southeast
with approximately 20,000 runners. Unfortunately, because
the race is so big, in order to get seeded, get a great start position
and a race chip (to be officially scored), you had to have written
confirmation that you ran a 10K within the past 6 months and ran
faster than 49:59. No matter how much I begged and pleaded,
(I told them that I ran Thursday night workouts with the 38-40 min
10K group in Central Park - they didn't seem too impressed...) they
did not let me start with the faster "elite" runners who
could run a 49:59 or faster and I could not get a race chip.
Oh well ...
Despite starting with the slower runners and starting off with
a 6:40 first mile, I managed to finish with a 39:17. However,
this is unofficial since I did not have a chip and therefore could
not qualify as one of the Top 500 finishers and get a neat, official
poster... (It was a blast and run in true New Orleans
style with lots of onlookers cheering from balconies, high school
bands playing at several mile markers, and a huge party with live
music, jumbalaya, and beer, beer, beer (at 9 AM). There were
helicoptors, over 40 invited elite world-class runners, and Rod
Stewart (he was wearing a PowerBar T-shirt and started with
the Kenyans --- I did not see him at any point during the race,
however - hmmm.)"
Note: From the CCC10K website, John was probably the nameless person
credited with a time of 39:13 in 245th place overall and 2nd
chipless person overall.

- We welcome the two newcomers who appear on the scoring team
--- Noel Comess and Arthur Cooke --- in their first
team race.
- Women's team would have been first-place if all the runners
were scored correctly!
- The biggest winner of the day was Tyronne Culpepper,
to whom Carmine Petracca gave the winning ticket for a
dinner for two at Coogan's Restaurant. Yes, we knew that
we were onto something when we put the Coogan billboard on our
front cover last week.
- Field notes of the absent-minded photographer:
"When I got to the Rabbit Run, I took out my camera and pointed
it towards the blissfully oblivious Irene Jackson-Schon.
Click. Nothing happened. Nada. I had
forgotten to bring the battery after taking it out for recharging.
Therefore, no photos today. This news must come as a great
disappointment to hardware-winning Tyronne Culpepper, who
spent extra time to provide the start time and course description
to make sure that I get to the right place at the right time.
P.S. This news must come as a great relief to that skilled photographer-dodger
Irene Jackson-Schon."

Stacy Creamer says: "Of all the people I know, I thought
Carsten would have been the most likely to be there."
Is that a compliment or a condemnation?
